William Maltese is at it again!
“You always
remember your first time,” says gourmand, gourmet, and internationally
best-selling author William Maltese by way of defining his inspiration for the
sixth, and latest, in his series of cookbooks. “Certainly, I’ve tales to tell
of the when and where of having initially tasted something I found particularly
delicious, whether it was an ‘Open-Face Irish Pub Sandwich’ while pub-crawling
in Ireland, a ‘Corrida Frittata’ after a bullfight on a Mexican ranchero, ‘Beer-Butt Chicken’ on an
isolated Pacific atoll, ‘Potato-Veggie Mélange’ while trekking the Incan Roads
of the Andes, ‘Arabian-Grilled Rosemary-Lemon Chicken’ upon return from the Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter) of the
Arabian peninsula, ‘Nevado del Ruiz Barro Pastel’ on the flanks of a still-active
volcano, or ‘“Let Them Eat Cake” Cake’, from a Fortnum and Mason picnic hamper
on the grounds of Versailles.
“I had the memories, and, more often than not, the recipes;
so, with the help of fellow-chef Bonnie Clark, I set about nostalgically
recreating those wondrous firsts that are so-well remembered by me, most of the
time managing duplications as well if not better than the originals.
“More personal than most of my cookbooks, I thoroughly
enjoyed conjuring these reminiscences, as well as providing the luscious
recipes that go with them.”
